Long or Short Traffic Wand

Long or Short Traffic Wand

Long or Short Traffic Wand

When making a choice between a long or short traffic wand it will depend on your working environment, visibility requirements, and how the wand will be used.

Think about the distances you want to cover in terms of directional indication. At greater distances a longer wand works well for discerning which way an operator is pointing so on airport aprons you generally find operators using marshalling wands with a longer length than say a banksman directing traffic around a construction site which tends to be closer proximity traffic signalling.

KnightKit supplies one of the UK’s most comprehensive ranges of LED traffic batons, with models in both short (≈27cm) and long (≈37cm) formats to suit every operational need in a wide range of colour options.

To help you decide if a long or short traffic wand is best for you, here are a few pointers to help.

  1. Visibility & Light Output

Long traffic wands (≈37cm)

  • Provide a larger illuminated surface, improving visibility at distance – better for pointing at greater distances.
  • Ideal for HGV yards, ports, airports, construction sites, and any environment where operators must be seen from far away.
  • Most long models use multiple LEDs (19 in each unit) for strong 360° light output.

Short traffic wands (≈27cm)

  • Still highly visible with the same light output and total number of LED’s, items like our KB20R also have 19 LEDs (more than most competitors) for longer distances the pointing effect is not as effective (basically because its a smaller block of light)
  • Suitable for close‑range marshalling, car parks, events, and general traffic control.
  1. Handling & Portability

Short wands

  • Lightweight and easy to carry on a belt clip or wrist lanyard.
  • Ideal for long shifts as easier to handle than a long wand
  • Compact enough to store in large quantities for event teams or emergency kits.

Long wands

  • Only slightly heavier but offer greater signalling presence over long distance
  • Better for operators who need to be seen above vehicles or crowds.
  • Better for stand alone deployment as increases the height of the wand when placed in tripods, traffic cones etc.
  1. Deployment Options

Both long and short wands can be used:

  • Hand‑held for marshalling vehicles, pedestrians, and equipment.
  • Mounted on traffic cones using KnightKit’s magnetic cone adapters, creating elevated markers for lanes, entry/exit points, and demarcation zones.
  • Mounted on tripods for standalone lighting or hazard marking.

Long wands offer slightly better visibility when deployed as a stand alone warning marker due to their increased height.

  1. Use Cases

Choose a Short Wand (27cm) if you need:

  • Close‑range signalling circa 200m
  • Lightweight equipment for long shifts
  • Compact storage for multiple units
  • A versatile all‑rounder like the KB20R, used widely in construction, ferry ports, airports, and emergency response.

Choose a Long Wand (37cm) if you need:

  • Maximum visibility at distance where directional signalling is key.
  • Clear signalling for HGVs, plant machinery, or large vehicles
  • Enhanced presence in busy or noisy environments
  • Stronger visual authority for banksmen and marshals
  1. Summary Table
Feature Short Wand (27cm) Long Wand (37cm)
Visibility Very High Very high
Best For Close‑range marshalling, events, general traffic control Ports, airports, HGV yards, construction sites
Portability Excellent Good
Fatigue Level Lowest Slightly higher
Mounting on Cones/Tripods Yes Yes (more visible when mounted)
LED Count Up to 19 LEDs (KB20R) Up to 19 LED’s, longer light tube

  1. Durability

Short wands can last longer for several reasons:

  • Shorter length means less risk of bending or breaking compared to longer wands.
  • Operators tend to handle short wands more gently as they are lighter and easier to control, reducing impact damage.
  • The LED circuit board inside is shorter, lowering the chance of fatigue or damage along the length as there is less to stress
  • Short wands are less likely to be tapped or banged against hard surfaces, which can cause wear and tear on longer wands.
  • KnightKit’s quality materials and solid-state design ensure that, if used correctly, short & long wands should provide many years of  reliable service.

This durability makes short wands a practical choice for frequent use in closer range marshalling and environments where equipment longevity is important. They are basically less prone to get sat on, tapped against hard surfaces, or put under operator stress (i.e. people like to bend things that really shouldn’t be bent).

Final Recommendation

If you need maximum visibility and authority, choose a long wand. If you need lightweight, versatile, everyday use, choose a short wand.

Most organisations benefit from having both sizes available, ensuring the right tool is always on hand for the environment and distance involved.

If you need a long aircraft style marshalling wand consider the KB36AV Orange Wand, this robust wand uses a single 1W LED to illuminate a light sleeve, it provides a softer light ideal for night vision over a great distance and is highly robust. Read more…
